All the Reasons Not to Miss the Picassian Bullfight in Málaga

Its popularity and importance are comparable to the Beneficencia Bullfight in Madrid or the Goyesca of Ronda. It is therefore one of the most distinctive events in the bullfighting calendar. Here we give you several reasons why you should not miss it. Take note.

The Picassian Bullfight of Málaga has become one of the most important cultural and bullfighting highlights of the year in the city. Its significance lies in several factors that clearly distinguish it from a conventional bullfight — making it something that should be experienced at least once in a lifetime. Why? Here are some of the reasons. First of all, it represents a true fusion of arts. It is not simply a bullfighting event, but a complete artistic experience. The La Malagueta bullring is transformed into a kind of “temporary art gallery” paying tribute to Málaga’s most famous artist, Pablo Picasso.

For this occasion, the arena, barriers and wooden structures are decorated with works inspired by Picasso’s artistic universe. The matadors also wear specially designed trajes de luces (traditional bullfighting suits) created with cuts and motifs that evoke the aesthetics of the great painter. The event is often accompanied by symphonic or choral music, which adds an extra cultural dimension to the afternoon and makes the experience even more unique. It is also important to highlight the historical and tourist context of the event. The Picassian Bullfight traditionally takes place during Holy Week (Semana Santa), usually on Holy Saturday, making it a major attraction for cultural tourism in Málaga during this period. In 2026, the event will take place on 4 April.

Beyond the chance to watch bullfighting in a unique arena specially transformed for the occasion, the event also represents a celebration of Málaga’s identity, recalling Picasso’s deep connection with his hometown and his well-known passion for bullfighting, which he depicted in numerous drawings and engravings throughout his life. For the 2026 edition, the visual design of the arena will be created by artist Jacob Vilató, Picasso’s great-nephew. His involvement further strengthens the cultural dimension of the event, which has become one of the most distinctive bullfighting spectacles of the year. Some might think that with such artistic elements, the bullfighting line-up becomes secondary. Nothing could be further from the truth. As befits an event of this importance, the 2026 Picassian Bullfight features an outstanding line-up: Fortes, Juan Ortega and Pablo Aguado, who will face bulls from two prestigious Salamanca ranches: El Pilar and Puerto de San Lorenzo. In addition, the 2026 edition has special significance, as it forms part of the celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of La Malagueta bullring.
