The Picassian Bullfight in Málaga: A Cultural and Bullfighting Landmark

Easter in Málaga has always been a time of passion and bullfighting. In the past, the Easter Sunday bullfight rivalled that of La Maestranza in Seville. However, in recent years, Holy Saturday has become the key day for bullfighting in Málaga. A brilliant decision, complemented by a major cultural event: The Picassian Bullfight. A stellar lineup and the fusion of multiple art forms in a single performance, set against an incomparable backdrop. Don’t wait any longer—secure your tickets now!

The Picassian Bullfight is one of the most eagerly awaited events of the year in Málaga. Not just from a bullfighting perspective—though undoubtedly, it is one of the most prestigious and distinctive spectacles on the calendar—but also as a cultural highlight of the city.

To begin with, the lineup is exceptional: on 19th April (Holy Saturday) at 6:00 PM, bulls from Álvaro Núñez Benjumea will take centre stage. Leading the bill is Saúl Jiménez Fortes, winner of last year’s Feria’s cape of honour and the matador behind one of the finest performances of the past season—if not the very best—which cemented his place in the spotlight once again.

Juan Ortega is one of the most esteemed artistic bullfighters of today. Over recent years, he has refined his interpretation of the art, achieving a consistency and depth that not only allows him to handle a greater variety of bulls but also makes him one of the most sought-after matadors at present.

Closing the lineup is Peruvian sensation Andrés Roca Rey, the undisputed star of modern bullfighting. The most talked-about, the biggest box-office draw, and the ultimate attraction in any prestigious bullfighting event. His presence alone elevates this spectacle to a whole new level. Yet, the Picassian Bullfight is much more than just a bullfight. As mentioned earlier, it is an artistic celebration. Music and painting play a crucial role in this extraordinary event. Lances de Futuro and the Provincial Council of Málaga meticulously oversee every detail, ensuring that the musical accompaniment is carefully curated to enhance each of the matadors’ performances.

Of course, a tribute to Picasso—a celebration in honour of such a legendary artist—would not be complete without painting. That is why the 2025 Picassian Bullfight will feature the renowned artist Pablo Alonso Herráiz, who has not only designed the event’s promotional poster but will also craft the visual setting for this unique occasion.

Born in Seville but a Málaga resident for over three decades, Herráiz is an esteemed professor at the University of Guadalajara (Mexico) alongside his prolific artistic career. He has created numerous posters for various events, including the 2007 Málaga Holy Week poster and the very first Picassian Bullfight poster.

Described as “avant-garde and groundbreaking” by Francisco Salado, President of the Málaga Provincial Council, Herráiz’s work was officially unveiled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in the Palacio de la Aduana, where details of the event’s set design were also presented. This artistic masterpiece will provide the finishing touch to a spectacular fusion of multiple art forms, set against the unique backdrop of La Malagueta, which this year marks its 150th anniversary.
